July 15, 2022 MEETING For the July 15 meeting, there will be two presentations. First, Chapter President Steve Ferrari will present a program entitled “Moving Gold by rail to Fort Knox”. This program was prepared by Jim Murrie and Naomi Peterson for the Lakes States Railway Historical ssociation. To stop hoarding, stop runs on banks, and show everyone that the U.S. had gold, hoarding gold was outlawed and collected. This was publicized and a huge quantity of the U.S. gold was then moved for safekeeping at Ft. Knox. This program explains what happened along with how the gold was moved on the railroads. The second presentation will cover members’ slides from the June 11, 2022 field trip to the Ex-Southern Pacific Shops in Sacramento now owned by the California State Railroad Museum. The general public is not currently allowed in these buildings. Through our arranged tour, members were allowed in the 2 main buildings to have current activities explained. They were allowed to photograph many of the historic artifacts that are currently included with in for storage and potential restoration. This presentation shows some of these slides.
Book Sale Update! Central Coast received a donation of many railroad-related books from longtime member Conrad Gleason. The collection includes about 1000 hardcover books, and another 1000 in soft bindings. We will offer these for sale at the next several Chapter meetings. Since it is not practical to transport all of the books to the meetings, we will bring a small, random subset about 100 to each meeting. Many of the books are listed online with prices at http://members.trainorders.com/clem. We will update the list as time permits. If you wish to purchase any of these titles please send an email expressing the title or titles you wish to buy and the date you will be attending a meeting to: central_coast_chapter@yahoo.com.
