In an effort to become profitable Amtrak took delivery of a fleet of mechanical refrigerator cars. Offering express service at premium rates Amtrak began attaching their ExpressTrak cars to selected trains during the late 1990s. In 2001 ExpressTrak service was initiated on the San Joaquins and soon became familiar fixtures on Train 716. Seen here just west of Empire, a pair of ExpressTrak cars dutifully bring up the markers as CDTX 2051 approaches Dry Creek Bridge on September 14, 2001.
