An early Fall haze has settled over the San Joaquin Valley as Amtrak F40PH 368 crosses Dry Creek Bridge, just north of Empire on September 29, 1989. Today's consist features a former Santa Fe Hilevel diner, feeling right at home as it travels over the rails of it's alma mater. The Superliner experiment illustrated to Amtrak that longer station stops would need to be scheduled due to passengers taking more time to board the double-decker cars. Horizon Fleet cars soon returned to the San Joaquin and would be the mainstay of service until the advent of the California Cars in the mid-1990s.
