Into the train's seventh week of operation, a pair of Southern Pacific FP7As are now in charge of the San Joaquin. It's April of 1974 and SP 6463 has just changed crews at Port Chicago. The SP crew is now riding (and deadheading) inside one of the coaches as the Santa Fe crew moves it's Bakersfield-bound train onto the Santa Fe's Valley mainline. This costly crew change wouldn't end until early 1980.  (Steve Sloan - Ken Rattenne Collection)
