Train Time In Oakland

The year 1976 was a year of change for the San Joaquin, at least as far as power was concerned. The FP7As were reduced to standby status as the  two SDP40Fs took over daily service. On May 7, 1976,  No. 543 peeks out from behind SP's 16th Street Tower just prior to departure. As Train 710 pulls away from the aging 16th Street station a cloud of exhaust shoots out from the 543. By year's end F-units, SDP40Fs, steam-heated cars with large windows would give way to  pug-nosed F40PHs and Amfleet cars with tiny windows.
